In 2008 – 2009, LPA partnered with Tenants to Homeowners, another great Lawrence non-profit, to completely renovate a contributing property in the North Rhode Island National Historic District. This two-bedroom house on a perimeter block in the East Lawrence neighborhood had stood vacant and deteriorating for over ten years. The project required approval by the Douglas County Board of Commissioners and the Lawrence Historic Resources Commission, and benefited from small grants by the Douglas County Community Foundation, Capitol Federal Savings, and Community Development Block Grant funding.
It wasn’t easy, but this cooperative effort has resulted in a young couple with a newborn child being able to buy their first home, a fully renovated, energy-efficient home on the National Register, no less!
A once blighted property that was important to the East Lawrence Neighborhood is beautiful again. It is also the product of fruitful work between LPA and many governmental agencies and businesses and neighborhood groups and volunteers.
