Please join LPA as we check in on the busy folks at Haskell Greenhouse and their wonderful work at Haskell Indian Nations University. A Spring Preservation in Progress (PIP) award winner, Courtney Eddy King and her team of student greenhouse workers have been busy all year in campus wetlands, prairie lands and woodlands, but this tour will focus on exciting smaller garden plots around the greenhouse and campus buildings. Travis Campbell, Director of the Haskell Cultural Center and Museum, will also be with us to provide comments on campus history and historic buildings we pass along the way. Courtney and Travis are two of our favorite folks in Lawrence and we can’t wait to soak in the knowledge they provide!

The tour will begin at the Cultural Center, where work is underway in the garden out front to replace non-native plants with native ones and strengthen its listing as a Monarch Waystation, interpretive garden area and seed production plot. Then we will see the garden at Tommaney Hall. In both locations the goal is to re-introduce bio-diverse, thriving ecosystems that in turn supply native foods, medicines, dyes and fibers to its human partners. At the Greenhouse, garden produce plots are prevalent, but as an added treat we will also experience a small prairie plot created by Haskell alum Dori Summers in 2022 that continues to evolve today.

We can look forward to late-summer native plants such as goldenrods, sunflowers and asters in bloom before beginning their long slumber in autumn. The walking route is flat but close to a mile in length. Refreshments will be provided at the greenhouse, but participants should bring sun protection and water. Parking is available in the lot just south of the Cultural Center. Tickets are $10 and available here. All proceeds benefit Haskell Greenhouse.
