LPA has been celebrating our 40th anniversary with a full slate of events all year long—and thank you to all members who have participated in one or more—but this is the BIG event and we are excited to see as many members as possible.
Your ticket price will include an assortment of appetizers and a selection of beverages, including select beer, wine, cocktails, soft drinks, and a signature cocktail to help celebrate our 40th! Hear special guest speaker Katrina Ringler, Deputy Director of the State Historic Preservation Office, speak about the value of Multiple Property Documentation Forms on Registers of Historic Places. Learn more about LPA’s exciting new intensive survey project-- funded in part from a Historic Preservation Fund grant of Federal funds from the National Park Service-- from board member and Associate Professor of the KU School of Architecture Amy Van de Riet and two upper-level architecture students as they begin their project work.
Lawrence Country Club, with its gorgeous hilltop location and views, opened in 1914 with a nine-hole golf course and an expansive clubhouse built of wood and stone in a style similar to the Lakeview clubhouse to the northwest as well as many other national clubhouses. Over time, through various maintenance and remodeling activities, the exterior has lost several architectural features such as the chimney, wraparound porches, north dormer, front steps and some of the ‘chestnut shell’ stone columns (stone visible at the north entrance remains from the original.) The overall structure, however, remains intact. Be sure to check out the original 1914 bar and the framed charter in the entry lobby that lists the original founders with their addresses at the time of founding!
In 1935 golf course architect Perry Maxwell redesigned the course and added the second nine holes. The course was renovated again in 2006 and hosted the Women’s Big 12 Golf Championship in 2012.
Enjoy an autumn evening with your LPA friends and neighbors. Help us celebrate where LPA is today and spread appreciation to all the folks who have worked for and supported this group effort for so many years. We would love to see you there!
