Exploring the Past: Old Housewarming at the Judge Nelson T. Stephens House
/Wednesday, May 21st, 5–7 PM
In collaboration with its owners, Brad and Carrie Mayhew, the Lawrence Preservation Alliance is excited to invite you to an Old Housewarming at the historic Judge Nelson T. Stephens House, located at 340 N Michigan Street, Lawrence, KS. This event provides a unique opportunity to explore and appreciate the beauty and history of this remarkable home, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 19th, 1982.
Built in 1868 by Judge Nelson T. Stephens, a key figure in the founding of the Kansas University Law School, the home has been carefully preserved over the years. The Judge's daughter Kate also lived in the house in her youth. She was the first woman to chair an academic department at the University of Kansas and was the first President of the KU Alumni Association.
A large brick structure with a full basement, it sits on a stone foundation and retains many of its original features, such as beautiful wood trim and an elegant central staircase. The home is a striking example of the Villa style, with its charming architecture and thoughtful design. While the Mayhew property is limited to the home, the National Register Property spans several acres and also includes an old stone barn, adding to the home’s historical appeal. Carrie Mayhew has decorated the home with period furniture including several pieces from Lawrence's beloved Castle Tea Room, and a piece which purportedly survived Quantrill's raid.
In February 2015, LPA hosted an Old Housewarming event when the house was vacant and being prepared for sale by members of the George and Betty Allen family. George and Betty, longtime LPA members, had called the home their own since 1949, raising their family there. Their stewardship of the home added a new chapter to its history and preservation. Their son Jeff Allen will be at the event to share about his family's time in the house.
As we gather for this Old Housewarming you will have an opportunity to step back in time and learn about the history of the house, its architecture, and its significance to the Lawrence community. The evening will include an open tour of the home and a chance to connect with fellow preservation enthusiasts.
Join us as we celebrate this historic treasure and the preservation efforts that have helped maintain its beauty and significance. The Old Housewarming is an important opportunity to honor the past while looking toward the future of historic preservation in Douglas County. We invite you to join us for this unforgettable evening, exploring the home that once belonged to one of Kansas’ most respected judges.
