Exploring the Rhody Delahanty House: A Success Story of Preservation

The Rhody Delahanty House, located at 1100-1106 Rhode Island Street in Lawrence, Kansas, is a shining example of successful preservation efforts. The house is part of the North Rhode Island Street Historic Residential District and has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s. Over the years, the property fell into severe disrepair, but a determined group of individuals, including Stan and Joni Hernly, took on the monumental task of saving it from demolition.

In 2013, after years of declining conditions, the City of Lawrence condemned the property and put out a request for proposals to find a developer willing to restore the historic buildings. The Hernlys, along with Mike Myers and others from 1106 Rhode Island LLC, stepped up to the challenge. Their proposal was accepted, and work began in 2015 to rehabilitate the property, preserving the two-over-two house, an offset gabled addition, the barn, and a commercial garage.

This extensive rehabilitation project succeeded in saving the historic structures and adding a new chapter to their story. A one-story master suite addition was added to the back of the house, and a two-story garage with a second-floor apartment was built on the property. The repurposed barn is now the office of Herly Associates, an architectural design firm.

This Old Housewarming event offers a unique opportunity for the Lawrence Preservation Alliance community to come together and explore the history and transformation of the Rhody Delahanty House. The event will be held on Thursday, June 12th, from 5:30 to 7 pm, where attendees can tour the property, learn about the preservation process, and hear the inspiring story behind the revitalization.

During the event, Stan and Joni Hernly will be honored with the 2025 Preservation Achievement Award for their many significant contributions to preservation efforts in Lawrence, including this special property, and contributing to the ongoing revitalization of Lawrence’s historic neighborhoods.
